The only ‘labor’ you need to worry about this coming holiday weekend is partying at WET REPUBLIC.

It’s no coincidence the summer season is sandwiched between two holiday weekends — Memorial Day kicking off the festivities in May, and Labor Day giving summer the proper celebratory sendoff it deserves in September. And really, what better way to usher in and bid adieu to everyone’s favorite season than three days of decadent debauchery? Take an extra vacation day or start perfecting your “sick voice,” ‘cause WET REPUBLIC is poised to throw the bash to end all bashes, and if you intend to end your summer with a bang (literally and figuratively), attendance is mandatory. Just don’t plan on making it to work on Tuesday.

If you failed to make an appearance at WET REPUBLIC’s Memorial Day weekend celebration, 1) you truly did “fail,” and 2) here’s who you missed behind the decks: Deadmau5, Roger Sanchez, Afrojack, Boris, Cedric Gervais, Chuckie, Fedde Le Grand, Sharam, and Victor Caldarone. Oh, and just to add insult to injury, because a picture really is worth a thousand words (or 1,000 CC’s of silicon):MDW-Saturday, MDW-Sunday, MDW-Monday. A video, on the other hand, is worth at least a few more than that: http://www.youtube.com/wetrepubliclv.

Considering what and whom the MGM Grand and WET REPUBLIC have in store for Labor Day weekend, however, the talent and events of Memorial Day will seem nothing more than a high school house party in comparison… Not the most accurate analogy, but you get the idea.

The festivities kick off Friday, Sept. 3 with Bad Boy Bill and Boris. The one and only Diddy hosts Saturday’s shenanigans, with Serge Devant and Funkagenda manning the decks. Will.I.Am and Sharam provide the aural stimulation on Sunday, and the not-to-be-missed Monday holiday hosts the star-studded lineup of Robbie Rivera, Fedde Le Grand, Laidback Luke, Chuckie, and Afrojack.

As of Friday, Aug. 27, tickets were still available for all four events, but they will be sold out in short order. The MGM Grand and WET REPUBLIC have truly outdone themselves this time around, and Labor Day may never be the same again.

House music, schmouse music… Everyone’s a DJ these days, and everyone spins. (I can’t even type the phrase “spin” with a straight face; since the advent of Serato and such programs have single-handedly paved the way for the “MP3J”.) And whether it’s trance, techno (in the traditional sense of the word, not in the “I use the word ‘techno’ to describe anything with a beat over 50 bpm’s because I’m a musical moron” sense), electro, or even a genre at the opposite end of the electronic musical spectrum, such as drum ‘n’ bass, somehow it’s all categorized as “house music.” And while the aforementioned genres may indeed incorporate elements of old-school house music, today’s house is a far cry from the soulful, sultry sounds of yesteryear… thank God.

Modern house has all but obliterated the baby-making beats of days gone by, and while the pioneers of the scene will forever be held in high regard for their influence and production prowess, there are a number of house harbingers taking electronic dance music to the next level.

Swedish House Mafia represents not one, not two, but three such DJ/production powerhouses in today’s scene. Comprised of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso (and one-time Mafia member Eric Prydz, a.ka. Pryda) the trio (sans Prydz) is indeed a dominating force behind the decks. Not merely a flash in the pan, Axwell, Angello and Ingrosso have proven their fortitude with their solo DJ sets and production aptitude in the studio. Together, they combine their studio and performance capabilities to create a live set that is understandably second to none.

And of course, in the vein of modern, mainstream house producers/DJ’s I would be remiss if I neglected to mention Mr. Benny Benassi. Whether you favor old- or new-school house, chances are, if you’ve been to a club showcasing any genre of electronic dance music, you’ve heard one of his tracks and/or remixes. Benassi is, by far, one of the most prominent names/faces on the dance music scene. And if you still haven’t a clue who the hell I’m writing about, Google “Satisfaction”, and by the time you hear the track’s dominant riff, I don’t doubt you’ll be saying to yourself, “Oh, that guy…” Yes, that guy.

If you’ve yet to see either Swedish House Mafia or Benassi live, I suggest you plan a road trip or book a flight (and a room at the MGM Grand) to Vegas this weekend, July 26 and 27, as both will be performing at the WET REPUBLIC pool on consecutive days.

Swedish House Mafia takes to the decks Saturday in what will be their first-ever performance in Las Vegas. Benassi, no stranger to the Vegas club scene, will be taking the reins on Sunday.

Online tickets to Saturday’s event are already sold out, but additional tickets will be available at the door. Oh, and did I mention opening for Benassi on Sunday will be none other than Laidback Luke. Consider yourself notified…

While the term “nightlife” will forever be inherently tied to the hours between when the sun dips below the horizon and rears its beautiful, or ugly (depending upon if you’re still up from the night before) face the following morning, the advent of massive daytime pool parties has single handedly served to redefine the when and where of partying. And leave it to DJhere and MGM Grand’s Wet Republic to join forces and take revelry to the next level by declaring war on nightlife and introducing its naughtier and more devious better half. Ladies and gentlemen, “daylife” has arrived, and she’s a hell of a lot more fun than her old man.

For those who may be scratching their heads wondering, “What the hell is Wet Republic?”, if you’re a seasoned Intervention attendee, you have some idea of what Wet Republic may entail. Please note I did use the phrase “some.”
Wet Republic is MGM Grand’s “ultra pool,” and while I haven’t a clue where the term “ultra pool” originated from, I am damn certain Wet Republic epitomizes the phrase.
At 53,000 square feet, the pool area itself is beyond massive; yet the grandeur of the pool extends well beyond the waterline.
Partygoers can choose to merely bask in the sun and enjoy beats provided by A-list DJ talent such as Too Many DJs, Deadmau5 or Roger Sanchez. More discerning partiers, however, may elect to receive the ultimate in VIP treatment in one of the numerous bungalows located throughout Wet Republic. The bungalows are located on the highest level for a panoramic view of the sophisticated mayhem and offer three private spas, dedicated restrooms, giant flat-screen televisions and even a video game console replete with the latest and greatest game selection and DVD library. And if that weren’t enough, massage treatments are also available. Hmmm… Listening to a DJ the likes of Deadmau5 while drinking with my closest friends with a sea of eye candy spread out before me and enjoying a massage and video games simultaneously? Not to mention, easy access to uncrowded restrooms? Done and done.
Party cabanas located adjacent to the two saltwater pools are also available and boast all amenities and services of the bungalows.
Perhaps you’re not the ultimate connoisseur of bottle service and/or VIP treatment, however. Maybe a few poolside cocktails and exceptional DJ talent are the keys to your heart. Well, fret not, as Wet Republic has you covered, too.
As I mentioned above, Too Many DJs will be hitting the decks this Sunday, April 18. The ultimate end-all, be-all blowout bash, however, arrives Memorial Day weekend (Friday, May 28 through Monday, May 31). In addition to Deadmau5 and Roger Sanchez, Afrojack, Boris, Cedric Gervais, Chuckie, Fedde Le Grand, Sharam and Victor Caldarone will all be providing beats for your listening pleasure.
And if that’s not enough to send you scrambling for your board shorts or bikinis, go check out a few photos of past events at wetrepublic.com. You can thank me later.
