Tiesto, Tijs Michiel Verwest, was born on January 17th 1969 in the Netherlands. In 1997, he co founded the ‘Black Hole Recordings’ label, which is where he released his infamous ‘In Search of Sunrise’ CD series. In 1998, he teamed up with producer Dennis Waakop Reijers, who is credited as producer, writer, composer, and arranger on many of Tiesto’s Releases. After many popular releases, including his remix of the Sarah McLachlan hit ‘Silence,’ he reached the #1 spot in the DJ Magazine Top 100 for 3 consecutive years (2002 – 2004).

In 2004, Tiesto performed at the opening ceremony in Athens, becoming the first DJ to perform on stage at the Olympics. In 2007, he launched his radio show, ‘Tiesto’s Club Life,’ and his 3rd studio album ‘Elements of Life,’ both have which become highlights of his career. ‘Elements of Life’ reached number on the Dutch chart, as well as earning a Grammy Nomination for it in 2008. In 2009, he went on to release his fourth studio album ‘Kaleidoscope,’ and in 2011 he released his compilation CD, ‘Club Life, Vol1 Las Vegas.’

In 2012, he was voted to the #3 spot in the DJ Mag Top 100 and released the second part of the CD Compilation series, ‘Club Life, Vol 2 Miami.’

I honestly don’t even know where to begin to describe a weekend at Coachella. Obviously, everyone’s Coachella experience is a little different, but for those of us who went, I’m sure we can all agree that Coachella is one of our favorite weekends of the whole year. If you’ve never been to Coachella, well then it sucks to be you, and if you have been, then you know exactly what I am talking about when I say that it is an amazingly unique experience. You can’t truly understand what it’s like until you go and experience it for yourself. Although this was my first year at ‘Chella (and so I guess that makes me a newbie), I think we can agree that the line-up and overall experience topped all years’ past.

How you decide to travel and stay at Coachella is obviously a personal preference, and as a noob, I was told that the right way to do Coachella is to camp. I didn’t end up camping, and I didn’t end up regretting that decision either. I’m sorry, but for some reason going home to an air-conditioned home at 2 am and taking a shower after being rubbed up on by sweaty strangers all day sounds a little more appealing than sleeping on the uneven ground and waking up drenched in sweat because it’s 9am and already 90 degrees out.

For me, I really had no idea what to expect for Coachella. I had been a Stagecoach girl the past two years, and I literally bought my Coachella ticket the night before the festival started. Although it was ridiculously hot, it was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. During the day, you wander around from tent to tent discovering new artists (and hitting up the chill tents with misters and AC because it’s so miserably hot). Then once the sun starts to set, you feel overwhelmed with excitement knowing that the rest of the night you will be seeing some of your favorite artists.

As I’m sure most of you heard, the best part of Friday night was Swedish House Mafia’s performance. Before their performance, the Sahara tent across the venue was filled with wild fans raging (or raving) to the beats of Alesso and Afrojack. As soon as Afrojack’s set finished, I found myself in a stampede of music lovers racing over to the Main Stage. Thousands stood in anticipation in the middle of the crowd, waiting for Swedish House to appear in the massive DJ booth. And for many of us, it was a particularly exciting moment because a lot of us had never seen Steve Angello, Axwell, and Sebastion Ingrosso all together. Many, like myself, had only seen one of the three spin at other festivals and nightclubs, but seeing them all together as THE Swedish House Mafia was an experience I will never forget. Their 8-minute opener could not have gotten the crowd more pumped for one of the best shows that the house and electronic scene have seen to this day. The opener, without a doubt, set the tone for the rest of their electrifying set and phenomenal light show.

Saturday night was truly a special night when Radiohead graced the Main Stage.And for all those who chose to see Kaskade over Radiohead… shame on you! You can see Kaskade almost anywhere; Radiohead doesn’t even tour anymore, so this was a rare moment! Their performance was hands down, the most beautiful performance I have ever experienced. As I layed down on the grass and held hands with my boyfriend, we both looked up and took in the moment while we listened to the mellow tunes of “House of Cards.” The night sky was filled with stars. The venue was surrounded by lit up palm trees and neon lit balloons that wrapped around the whole venue by a single strand of string. The atmosphere of Coachella during the Radiohead performance was something I will never forget. I am so grateful that I got to experience something so extraordinary.

One thing that truly set Coachella apart from previous years and other festivals was the Tupac hologram during Snoop and Dr. Dre’s Sunday night performance. It was the perfect way to end an epic weekend in the desert. When Tupac’s hologram appeared, the crowd went nuts. I was on my boyfriend’s shoulders watching and listening to the crowd all around me as Tupac and his chiseled abs appeared on the big screen. At that moment, I could feel the crowd instantly bond over their love for music and their appreciation for artists who have left a lasting impression in the world of music. Tupac’s hologram at Coachella was so sick and creative, so when I overheard girls at my school bragging that Stagecoach had a hologram of Carrie Underwood during Brad Paisley’s performance, I was absolutely baffled! Don’t get me wrong, Carrie’s my girl! I would take a Louisville slugger to a guy’s car headlights if he cheated on me too. But really… a Carrie Underwood hologram?! I’m not sure if Stagecoach is aware, but she’s still alive and kickin! Tupac was a rap genius who was tragically murdered and is a music legend. I don’t really see how Stagecoach can even try to compare a Carrie Underwood hologram to Tupac’s. Good joke Stagecoach.

Then, the place went black agan. We all waited, not knowing what the hell or who the hell was coming next. As the lights come back on, the tunes of “I Need a Doctor” come on. The song continued to play and as the first verse neared, Eminem himself slowly rose from the middle of the stage. Just when I thought nothing could top the excitement of Tupac’s hologram, another one of music’s most talented rappers took the stage, making the crowd go wild. Eminem absolutely killed it, and yet another Coachella performance that blew the crowd out of the water.

I was definitely sad to leave Coachella, but now I have something EPIC to look forward to for the next 11 months. I went to Coachella on a whim, dropped way too much money that I didn’t have, and got freakishly weird tan lines from the 105 degree heat. But you know what, it was all soooo worth it! If you have been to Coachella before, you feel the same love and excitement I have for it, and if you haven’t been before, seriously get your ish together and get a ticket next year. I promise you, you will not regret it!
