By: Bonnie Dickson

Ladies, if you haven’t heard, New Year’s Eve is all about the glitter, glam, and sparkle. Although the big night is just a few short days away, there is still time to put together a fabulous look for the year’s biggest party. Not sure where to start? My suggestion is to use a simple black dress as your canvas, then glam up your look with accessories and a fabulous pair of shoes. Follow these simple tips to get that perfectly chic and sexy NYE look.

Dress: There are so many different styles of dresses that are popular today and that are flattering for any figure, so choose a dress that compliments your body type. And for Heaven’s sake, if you know you’re a size 4, don’t try to squeeze into a size 0.

Color: Black is a timeless and classic color for any black tie event. However shades of grey, navy or even nude or beige are also appropriate. Stay away from busy prints and bright colors and please, do not wear white. We are not in Miami. We are in San Diego.

Hair: The easiest way to dress up any look is with a loose bun and a sparkly headband or hair piece. If you have the time, a braided updo is especially classy and elegant. There are also additional benefits to wearing an updo. For example, if you find yourself slung over a toilet at 4AM. No best friend needed. Not enough hair for an up-do? Take an extra few minutes with a straightener or curling iron to make sure your hair is even and polished.

Accessories: Choose one piece of jewelry as your showpiece accessory and accent this piece with several smaller, simpler pieces. Keep in mind also that choosing the right accessory depends on the style and cut of your dress. Have a favorite pair of gorgeous gold, drop, earrings? Be sure to stick with a simple dress that is not overly textured and leave out the necklace. Wearing a thick or layered necklace? Wear small, studded earrings to prevent an accessory overload.

Shoes: If nothing else, show up naked with a fierce pair of shoes.

Makeup: The easiest way to add sparkle to any look is with makeup. Sparkle can be subtly incorporated with glitter eye shadow, eye-liner, mascara, and bronzer. Add gold or silver shadow at the tear duct or use glitter eye shadow right on the center of the lower part of the lid for dramatic eyes. If you’ve got great lips, accent them with a glittery red or add a dab of glitter gloss in the middle of bright red lips for an even bolder look. Coordinate shadow and lip colors with accessories and shoes. Also, be careful not to drown your face in too much glitter or you might end up looking like you got glitter gunned by Ke$ha.

Finishing Touches: Get a mani pedi. Nobody wants to see chipped nails or even worse, chipped toes.

There you have it girls. The best collection of fashion advice for New Years Eve is now at your disposal – do something with it! See you Saturday night for the hottest New Year’s Eve party in San Diego!

New Year’s Eve. You go over what to wear every year but the outfit never quite comes together. It doesn’t help that your date is so preoccupied with her own outfit that she doesn’t bother to check yours until it’s too late. Make this year different. Give your date a run for her money and follow these simple guidelines to look fresh and sophisticated for NYE 2012:

Fit: Fellas, do yourselves a favor and leave your “dad” suit at home this year. For suits and slacks – think fitted. Baggy and boxy suits have been, and will likely remain, out of fashion. Look for slim cut slacks and fitted shirts, which broaden the shoulders and slim the waist. These cuts will emphasize your masculine physique and give you a tailored look that is sure to impress. Found the perfect pair of pants that are just a hair too long? Take them to a tailor and get them hemmed! The suit is the most important element of your look so if you don’t own one, do yourself a solid and go invest in a new one.
Shop: Nordstrom, Express, H&M.

Color: While you may be tempted to explore bold colors for suits and slacks, black or grey are most appropriate for New Year’s Eve and are versatile for use throughout the year. Solid colors are also a better option for shirts. Try classic pairs such as whites and greys to accent charcoal or black suits. Feeling adventurous? Play around with shades of purple and blue.
Shop: Nordstrom, Express, H&M.

Tie: Remember that thing you wore at your eighth grade promotion? Yes, a tie. Wear one. Better yet, go buy a new one. Look for narrow or skinny ties and don’t be afraid to play around with different textures and patterns. Incorporate a striped or bold colored tie to accent your look. Bow-ties are also fair game. Shop: Nordstrom Rack, Macy’s, Nordstrom.

Shoes and Socks: Match socks to your tie or shirt. Go for patterns and textures such as argyle and stripes. Shoes bring the whole outfit together, so shop for a new pair of loafers or try a slim fitting ankle boot. Shop: Nordstrom Rack, Macy’s, Nordstrom.

Belts & Etc: Gentlemen, for God’s sake, WEAR A BELT! Saggy pants are sloppy and showing your boxer briefs is even worse. Also, don’t be afraid of a pocket square or cuff links to add a touch of sophistication to any outfit. Last but not least, shave. A little personal grooming goes a long way.

So there you have it. Follow these fashion forward tips and you’re sure to leave a lasting impression that will follow you into the New Year! Still need inspiration? Check out these fits for motivation…

Now that all the hard work is over and all the makeup and glitter is off and down the drain, I finally have time to turn around and reflect on last saturdays fashion show at the IVY.

To an outsider, it seems as though taking care of 10 models in tiny costumes is a cakewalk but I will let you in on a little secret…the frenzied world of modeling is anything but. I learned that there is way more to the craft than just having a pretty face or a hot body. In the three hours we were given to get ready, there had to be parking found (which downtown on a saturday night is almost impossible), costume fittings/changes, makeup and hair, forms to fill out, food being eaten, lineups made, walkthroughs completed, last-minute costumes fixes, and then…the BIG MOMENT! WHEW! Seems like a lot, and believe me, it is…but the final payoff at the end of the night when you actually see the show and hear the feedback…that feeling of ultimate satisfaction is not matched by much!

The girls all walked out in a line to a VERY full club, shaking and grooving to the tunes of Edward Maya and Alexandra Stan, all while the guests shouted and cheered, excited to see if each girl could possibly top the last (proud to say, we had all stunners). A BIG thanks to the IVY at ANDAZ for allowing to use our Saturdays for this show! The space they provided was perfect and, as always, the entertainment popped off.

I hope that we helped clear some kind of creative road block for you that night and that you are feeling inspired to become whatever makes you most happy this Halloween!

Big lips have always been sexy – but now makeup artists and style mavens alike have turned lips into a main focal feature with bold bright colors.

Seen on runways all across the world and even at the recent Australian Fashion Week – bold lipstick colors are back in a big way. We spoke with Napoleon Perdis while backstage at Australian Fashion Week and he confirmed our suspicions. “Lips are back. Orange, Bordeaux, red lips also pink. Girls are slowly starting to migrate from the gloss to the lipstick. Even if it’s a quick little stain…. I love that.”

Napoleon sent girls down the runway with bright orange lips, bold red lips and he even mixed it up at the Dhini show with orange on the top lip and pink on the bottom lip. It was a KNOCKOUT!

If your too shy to go for the multi-color lipstick – have no fear ladies you can still rock this trend. We suggest trying an orange like Diors Fire 545 or a bold red like Napoleons DeVine Goddess lipstick in Aphrodite on a night out with the girls. Oh!…and don’t forget your compact mirror, red teeth is unfortunately a hazard and can really spoil photos…
