Mardi Gras is a carnival that goes back to Medieval Times in Europe, many years before Europeans came to the New World. French explorer, Sieur d’Iberville, was the first to bring Mardi Gras to New Orleans, Louisiana. Literally translated as “Fat Tuesday”, the Mardi Gras celebration falls on the day before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the last day before Lent, a 40-day season of prayer and fasting for Roman Catholic’s which comes to an end on Easter Sunday. Today, you can see the traditional Mardi Gras colors purple, green, and gold littered throughout NOLA and other big cities around the United States.
