Yesterday as I floated by Ayla Simome spinning at the FIREHOUSE (after the Big Wheel Drag Races – which was awesome btw!) she cut my intoxicated sashay short and said, “I think you’re really going to like this”, and handed me a CD she had just burned. It was an odd but really intimate exchange; Like in Napoleon Dynamite when Deb takes the picture of Uncle Rico and says, “I think that’s going to come out really nice.” Or, when Uncle Rico pulls the ship out of the box as the couple ponders buying the “32 piece set” and the woman ever so oddly says, “I want that.” That movie captures those moments so well, and now, I was in a real life version; and for the record, it was pretty rad.
Any who, in that fleeting moment she knew if it was eclectic or slightly outside the coveted box that is “the scene” I was her Huckleberry. Needless to say, the CD was so good, I’ve listened to it several times in a row. I called her immediately: And told her we should weave a weekly around the musical attaché stored on that small sparkly disc.
My point here is that art truly is fleeting; and good art endures forever. So when she releases this CD, get one. Or maybe I’ll let you rip mine… It’s not “tracked out” but who cares: It’s one continuous mural of musica that should be consumed in one meal.
So after eight hours of drinking and dirty electro flowing threw my veins, I was once again reminded what makes “the scene” fresh, fun, and interesting: CHANGE. This CD was a little bit of yesterday, a little from today, and some from tomorrow, with a healthy dash of “under the radar.” Truly artistic.
Post Script – Craig Smoove‘s latest CD “Pt. Deux” ROCKS. It has been my fav for the last couple weeks. Seriously, Craig too can fish in the Sargasso Sea of the internet, and come up with true gems. Would love to talk about Craig more but this post is too long anyway .
